Art Therapy is based on psychotherapy theory and practice involving active art making in the context of a therapeutic relationship. The creative process and therapeutic relationship facilitates change by providing a young person with a safe form of communication and a valuable alternative to verbal communication, as some of our inner experiences can be hard to put into words. 

The artwork produced holds the emotions externally in concrete, provides visual evidence and gives the opportunity to explore and express inner conflicts and feelings leading to psychological and emotional realisation, insight and change.
Art Therapy gives young people a ‘safe space’ to explore emotions and life experiences within the guidance of a positive therapeutic adult relationship. While creatively expressing their emotional state, the young person starts to establish a sense of self. This enables them to facilitate coping with their feelings, to build self-esteem and self-identity. This can develop the confidence to re-engage with other service provision and within life generally - particularly with family issues and relationships.
